Swing

Mood swing. . . After Mondays freak out I feel better.
"Three of a Kind" is working nicely.
There's more script running the show then the table of 52 cards, which was the brain buster. To many variables, to many outcomes. Throw a "?" in the mix and Ka-BlAmo!
I dropped it yesterday afternoon just to get away from the mess.
And picked up "PSR" to rework.
PSR is much better now. Took around 4hrs to rebuild but it was worth it.
As I was rebuilding PSR I opened a few doors in my mind on how to work in The King.
What if the end user was playing PSR against The King?
Yeah I know. . . genius.

BETA v1.0.8

Compiled BETA v1.0.8 on Friday night.
Mostly positives.
One card to go.

I'm not sure what I want the mini game to be.
"3 of a kind" or "match 3" was an idea but I'm struggling to get it off the ground.
Also the "scratchie card" was a good idea but I'm also having issues with it.
As for combining the two games. . . sweet idea but i cant code in and outcome.
unless i leave it to the user.

Eg: There are 12 squares the end user can scratch.
The ideas is to match 3.
So the user scratches away until they have 3 of the same kind.
Problem: I cant get the mini game to realize that the user has 3 matching squares reviled.

So do I leave it to the end user to decide when the game is over?

OR

Drop it and work on something else.
So much to do.

Push

In my last post I was aiming to get a new BETA up and running by Sunday, but it might be possible to get something up by tomorrow evening.
which will work out well due to a meeting over a few to many jars at the local with No.2.
Speaking of No.2, we now have a working "To do list".
There are a number of things in the process of game development we skipped like this.
we dove in head first with no real guide or plan and at the moment it seems to be going smoothly without.
With two people running the show and a deadline fast approaching these things have to be left behind.
Code-zilla. . . crush data time!

Running on the Spot

No compile this week.
Still sitting on v1.0.6
I have made minor changes but not worth a compile.
I didn't get much time this weekend.
I found a few hours painting up the mystery boxes.

This week is going to be real productive.
I should have a new compile up by Sunday.
If all things fall into place I may have a compile ready Friday night.

That leaves us with one more card to fill. . . I cant believe it.

Chesty

My poor neglected blog.
When it comes down to it i would rather work on stuff then write about stuff I'm working on.

Time, its a killer.
All 50 questions are in for "Trivia" and it works!!!
I did a "stuff-together" and had a play.
Not much of a play because by that stage i was over looking at it.
So it got a handball to No.2. In joke.

I put on my smock and drew up The King.
Hes looking sweeeeeeet. I need to go back and fix a few flaws like his miss shaped crown.
Needs some colour too.
SO, that was all on the weekend.

Whats happened since then?

I've been busting sack on "Mystery Box".
No code just visuals.
It feels like I haven't done as much this week because I'm used to having 2 mini games well on there way by now.
When really I've worked harder this week then previous.

Here's my chest!

17) Gymnophobia is fear of what?

I should really change the name of this blog due to the fact this has nothing to do with Black Bean anymore.
any-hoooo.

Picture this is complete. . . for now.
Had I prob with being able to draw directly onto an image but I sussed it out with a complete recode. All i have to do is stick it into the main game and test.

As for Trivia.
I've developed a responsibly fast way of entering in each question.
Its a bit of a drainer because its so repetitive.
I'm currently sitting on Q17.

I found my magic pen of goodness so I'll flush, or should i say flash out The King.
Then handball it over to my mother lover brother to stuff around with colour.

So the plan is to have "Picture This", "Trivia" and "The King" compiled and ready for a test run.

Nudity!

Blunder

I stuffed up Red or Black.
For some reason I had the game all wrong in my head.
I built a different game to what R or B actually is.
To my disappointment this has put me back hours. Looks like my afternoon is booked.
I was planning on doing my usual Friday afternoon snooze. I need it today as well because my blunder kept my brain active all night as I tried to mentally fix my wrongs.
Its not all bad news.
The game I built could be rejigged and use for another game to add to the arsenal. . . and of course this played on the old think box last-night too.
Its funny, All these memory's have suddenly come flooding back of the God Box days.

Beautifully Slow

Busted ass on this waterfall with a handy little tutorial.
Looks amazing but as I predicted the iDevice cant handle its beauty.
I'm might have to animate it the old fashion way, frame by frame loop.
Check out the sweetness!
Click on it to see it stop and start ;)

Falling Waters

So after last nights build I'm pushing to get another two cards out on the table by the end of the week.
I know I'll have no problem with S the B (Spin the bottle).
Its just a straight copy and past from The WOD game.
Replace the wheel with a bottle and BINGO!
If I can find my long lost wacom pen I'll also start work on "Waterfall".
The code is already there. I'm not sure how to make waterfall visually entertaining.
I cant go all out and animate a sweet looking waterfall with out the FPS dropping too low.
Animation has to be minimal due to this.
What to do?

Cheeky

Where to begin. . .
The project has aged quite fast.
It's now sporting BETA v1.0!
So far after a bit of rejigging we have A,2,3,4,5,6 on the table.
Our mascot is alive in sketch form. Hes a cheeky bugger.

After a meeting on the weekend we have come to a decision to have the dead line on New Years.
We are on a roll at the moment but building is only 70% of the work.
So we need to be at the end of testing a good four weeks before release.
All smiles!
:)

PSR Continued

Ahhhh the "draw" court me off guard.
Fixed.
I demoed it to my better half while on the couch watching people spend wods of cash on pretty colors.
First peace of creative criticism is that the game is played on the 4 count.
When PSR is played in reality on a 3 count.
Reality 1. . . 2 . . . PSR.
Demo 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . PSR.
The positives with the demo is that the user naturally picks there weapon on 3.
This avoids cheating the system.
BUT. . . it just doesn't feel right. I'll stick to reality for now.

PSR

Started on PSR (Paper, Scissors, Rock) about 2 weeks ago. No real visuals just the Ai.
Ai is just a fancy word that makes me feel like I'm giving birth to something that thinks. When really all its doing to generating a random number.
One in three.
So When the user is ready they press a btn and the script generates a random number.
That random number represents paper, scissors or rock. . . oh crap, I forgot about a draw.
What happens if there's is a draw?
I'll continue this entry later.
End of transmission.

Optimize Prime

I jammed what I have done together this evening. Just to taste the fruits of my labor.
I should be happy, but there is a hole stadium of room for improvement.
Optimization will be googled tomorrow.
I think it's got something to with the FPS (frames per second) I have it set at 30fps which is nice and smooth for a high-end PC but no so much for a little iDevice.

A, 2, 3 are on the table ;)

Wheel of DOOOOOOM!

I spent my spare time coding the "Wheel of DOOM" yesterday.
I was lucky this time. Things just fell into place.
I had one problem that i still don't really understand.
Think of it like The Wheel of fortune.
I have a "hitTest" running so a point or pin or indicator sits on a peace of the pie the WoD (Wheel of Doom) stops spinning on.
So if the "point" for augments sake lands on the "purple" peace of the pie the programs knows that It's PURPLE. Yes it can read colour.
The problem is that if the "point" is sitting literally on the WoD it bugs out.
I had to find the sweet spot for the "point" which was off the WoD, not even touching it.
I don't get it. I mean its a hitTest! . . the "point" HAS to hit (touch) the WoD to read the colour.
Anyway all that matters is that it works.

Oh yeah, pictionary works!!
But that's for another post.
No Picture today :(

K.I.S.S.

I went to bed already having a nightmare last-night.
Just when I thought everything was coming together I hit a snag.

The snag:
When "A" (card) was dragged into "B" (cup) I made "A" invisible deliberately, so "A" would be removed from the table.
But. . .
just because "A" is invisible to the end user (player) doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the program.
When Program "A" was run and finished we would loop back to the table with "A" invisible :)
The user would select "C" (a new card) drag it to "B" again and it would bug out because "A" was still there!
Solution:
table.removeChild(table.ACcard);

As simple as that. . .

Lesson - Don't code when your already fucked.

Here's a nice pick

D-N-D

I found a new but old way of tackling problems in AS3.
I find it hard keeping track of code even with labels if i put all the code in one file.
So I've resorted to placing the code on frames.
The downside is that there's a lot of duplicating code.
But that's as easy as a simple copy and paste.

I've had an issue with drag N' drop.
I can get drag and drop to work well, but I cant get flash to recognize the difference between the user wanting to D-n-D and the user wanting to select (click).
What I wanted was to have a drag-able button that you can also click.
Flash see's the D-n-D as a "click". So when the user starts to drag the object Flash registers it as a click as well. . .
So after stuffing around for a few hours I've come up with a simple and easy AND probably more interactive way around this.
Drag the object (Card) into another object (Cup) to activate the "selection" (Start mini game).

010111001010010

Still hard at it.
I managed to get a number guessing game working on the old iPhone.
It has its problems.
I tend to find myself coaching people around the interface. . .
Note to self: Don't show drunk people. Numbers and drinking don't mix.

Ideas just keep on coming.
Every time a start work on a project an even better idea rears its shimmering head.
Only if an idea can be completed in an instant.
Is there an iPhone app that can do that yet?

Btn test V1.3 FINAL

It's the Matrix

I've managed to wrap my head around the basics of AS3 in about a week. I currently have my first fully scripted app running. it's a little crude. . . but it works.
At this rate i'll have a spiffy looking block bouncing around my iPhone before we have even through about story telling.
evolution baby!

Exciting times

Its been a few weeks. . .
But with time comes awesome news.
I've moved the project onto greener pastures.
Good buy web and hello iOS.
More soon. . .

Heres a new one.
Sorry it took so long, Crysis 2 sucked my life away. . .

Off topic

Firefox resume .part download

Sometimes a download is halted, perhaps closing a laptop lid, and normal resume doesn't work. Here is a fix courtesy of Boz:

1. You have two files on the destination folder. One with the original name and one with an extra ".PART" extension. Move both of these files to some other folder (Move! not copy)

2. Start your download again from the beginning (you have access to the download link, don't you?)

3. Let it download a few bytes, just to have those two files created again, with the exact same name. Now PAUSE this download.

4. Go to the folder where you backed up those old files. Copy both of these files to your download folder and replace the new created files when asked.

5. Now go to Firefox's Downloads form and resume the download.

Guru

I've been working on a new Lv but most of my time has been taken up with work and stupid As2 script.
I was so close in getting dynamic collision working.
I might need a guru to bug.
Expect a new Lv before the end of the week.

Stuck

The back bone of BB is ActionScript 2. . . Because its the only script I know.
I'm a little stuck at the moment.
I'm having trouble with the Hero interacting with another object.
eg - pushing a box around.
This is where the project slows.

Play and Comment

Open for business!
Its Q & A time.

Q. What the hell is Black Bean?
A. All in good time.

Q. Is it some sort of game?
A. Yes, some sort.

As you can see this is a very early build. All playable builds will look very similar to this. I will only be releasing final builds in the form of screen shots.

Q. But WHY!?
A. Suspense.

Q. I had a play. . . and it was broken.
A. Awesome! Drop a line.

Enough said, time to play!
